Apples and pears

In olden days there were no steps or ladders or step-ladders so people used to pile fruit up in a corner of the room so that they could clamber over them to reach higher floors.

Although modern technology has since given us staircases (thankyou wood!) some still refuse to join the 21st century and instead maintain the old ways. This constant use of fruit, which is often renewed only 2-3 times a year and is therefor prone to rotting, is murder on the joints - hence the term cockney - as it most commonly leads to cocked (or skewed) knees. These people are easy to identify due to their bow-legs and strange other-worldly accents.
