The

The word 'the' is very useful and has already made two appearances in this sentence, thereby proving it's worth right there.

Invented in 1955 by an irate Englishman, tired of calling the wars 'world war one' and 'world war two' he strove to find another way of describing them. He found just saying 'first world war' too glib and, after much trial and error, often involving the letters s and x he eventually settled on the combination 't' 'h' and 'e' which he thought went 'rather nicely' before his new phrase and gave it the gravitas it needed.

The word 'the' has since gone on to become part of our everyday language and is used by many people all over the world - such as orphans (eg. 'i'm an orphan and the kettle has boiled').
